Saint Francis Health System says the hospital's server was attacked last week and some patient data was compromised.
On Sept. 7, the hospital says they were made aware of an unauthorized external access of a server, which led to the extraction of some patient data. Saint Francis then received an anonymous demand for payment to recover the information.
The hospital launched an investigation and disabled the server. After notifying police, Saint Francis decided not to act on the demand "because payment does not guarantee or prevent data from being disclosed," according to a statement from Saint Francis.
Saint Francis says the hospital is working with a leading forensics firm to investigate the incident and enhance existing security measures.
Letters are being mailed to individuals who may have been affected. An identity monitoring service will be provided for those patients.
